HemoVoid™ Advances Proteomic Study of Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’sdisease is characterized by the accumulation and propagation of α-synucleinpathology in the central nervous system, yet the contribution of peripheralα-synuclein sources remains unclear. The blood represents a particularlyintriguing compartment in the context of α-syn dissemination. Erythrocytes areenriched in α-syn, and morphological abnormalities of erythrocytes in patientswith Parkinson’s disease suggest their potential involvement in the diseaseprocess. To measure erythrocyteα-synuclein by ELISA, HemoVoid™ was used to remove Hemoglobininterference. The study identifies erythrocytes as an importantreservoir of α-synuclein and demonstrates that bone marrow-derived erythrocyticα-synuclein likely contributes to brain pathology and Parkinson’sdisease-related neurodegeneration.
