Cleanascite™ Cited in Squamous Cell CarcinomaStudy

The study, led by researchers at the Universities and CancerResearch Institutes in the United Kingdom and published in nature metabolism,is titled “Tissue-specific fibroblast lipid cues impose the rate ofepithelial cancer invasion.â€� The research explores how lipid- uptakeor breakdown inhibits oral and lung epithelial cancer invasion.

Squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) originate in epithelialtissues of older individuals who have been exposed to environmentalcarcinogens. Despite overlapping clinical hallmarks, SCCs from differentanatomic sites have different prognoses. The authors show that fibroblastsconfer site-specific cues that determine SCC proliferation and invasion. Oraland lung fibroblasts have distinct lipid metabolism, transferring unique lipidsto SCC cells that promote epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, and oral andlung SCC invasion.

Advancing Cancer Research using Cleanacite™
Throughoutthe report, the researchers utilized Cleanascite™ to determine whetherstripping lipids influenced cancer cell response. For example, the articlestates “Cancer cells exploit lipid metabolism, so we tested whether lipidssecreted by fibroblasts drive SCC invasion. For this, we stripped lipids fromfibroblast secretomes with Cleanascite, then exposed SCC spheroids tolipid-stripped secretomes. This established that lipid-stripped oral and lungfibroblast secretomes lost the ability to drive SCC invasion. Importantly,stripping lipids from dermal fibroblast secretomes had no impact on visceralSCC invasion.â€�

The investigation concludes that tissue-resident fibroblastlipids interact with epithelial malignant cells in a tissue-specific manner todetermine SCC invasion. This work provides new therapeutic rationales andtargets for epithelial cancer prevention, biomarker development and cancertherapies.
